Ackworth & Hundhill Loop Walk – 5.96 Easy Miles in West Yorkshire

Looking for an easy countryside walk near Pontefract? Our 5.96-mile Ackworth and Hundhill Loop Walk takes us from the village we now call home into the surrounding West Yorkshire countryside, passing historic Hundhill Hall along the way.

Lyn and I personally walked, photographed and GPS recorded this route for The White Shire.

We rate it as an easy walk.

At just under six miles, it's longer than some of our other Ackworth routes, but we didn't find the walking itself particularly demanding.

For us, this is also another walk with a personal connection.

Ackworth is where Lyn and I now live, so rather than travelling across Yorkshire to find somewhere new, we're heading out and exploring the countryside around our own village.

And that's something we've come to appreciate since creating The White Shire – some really enjoyable Yorkshire walks can be found surprisingly close to home.

Our Ackworth & Hundhill Loop Walk

Lyn and I found this a really enjoyable local route.

At 5.96 miles, it's long enough to feel like you've had a decent walk without turning into an all-day expedition.

We found the terrain generally straightforward, which is why we've rated it easy.

There's also a good mixture of surroundings.

One minute you're walking through familiar parts of Ackworth and the next you're heading along countryside paths surrounded by fields and hedgerows.

Hundhill Hall adds some local history to the route too, giving us something interesting to look out for along the way.

Starting from Our Home Village of Ackworth

Ackworth lies a few miles south of Pontefract in West Yorkshire.

For most people doing this walk, Ackworth will simply be the starting point.

For Lyn and me, it's home.

That naturally changes how we see these local walks.

When we're exploring somewhere new, almost everything catches our attention because we've never seen it before. Walking around Ackworth is different because many of the roads, buildings and views are already familiar.

But walking still makes us notice things we might otherwise miss.

That's one reason we're gradually adding several Ackworth routes to The White Shire.

We want the website to feature the famous Yorkshire destinations, but also the lesser-known paths, villages and countryside that people might otherwise overlook.

Out into the Ackworth Countryside

It doesn't take long to leave the residential parts of Ackworth behind.

The surrounding landscape is largely agricultural, with fields, farms, hedgerows and tracks creating plenty of opportunities for walking.

This isn't dramatic Yorkshire Dales scenery.

There are no mountains to climb or huge stretches of exposed moorland.

Instead, it's gentler West Yorkshire countryside.

And we like that.

Not every walk needs to be challenging.

Sometimes Lyn and I simply want a few hours outside, a decent distance under our boots and something interesting to discover along the way.

This route gives us exactly that.

Walking Towards Hundhill

As the route heads towards Hundhill, the surroundings become increasingly rural.

This is one of the things we enjoy about living in Ackworth.

Pontefract isn't far away and we're within easy travelling distance of several larger towns and cities, yet there are plenty of countryside paths almost on our doorstep.

The 5.96-mile distance works particularly well here.

It's enough to take us beyond a short stroll around the village and properly out into the surrounding landscape.

Yet we still found the route easy going.

Hundhill Hall

Hundhill Hall provides the main historic landmark on this walk.

The current White Shire article records the hall as dating from the late 16th century and describes its connections with several families and the area's later industrial history. The building is now a private residence rather than a visitor attraction. (The White Shire)

For us, Hundhill Hall isn't somewhere we're visiting or entering.

It's part of the landscape we're walking through.

And that's an important distinction.

When doing the route, please remember that the hall is private property and enjoy it only from the public route.

A Walk Through Local History

One of the things we've found while creating The White Shire is that you don't necessarily need a castle, ruined abbey or stately home to make a walk historically interesting.

Sometimes it's an old farmhouse.

A stone wall.

A forgotten railway.

An unusual building.

Or simply the way a landscape has changed over time.

Hundhill gives this walk that extra bit of character.

Instead of simply completing a six-mile countryside loop, we have something that encourages us to find out more about the area we're walking through.

That's become a big part of what Lyn and I enjoy about The White Shire.

We go for the walk – and quite often come home wanting to know more about what we've seen.

An Easy Walk Near Pontefract

If you're looking for easy walks near Pontefract, this is one we'd consider.

At 5.96 miles, it's obviously longer than our 3.8-mile Ackworth Loop, but we didn't find it significantly more difficult in terms of terrain.

The main difference is simply that you're spending longer on your feet.

There are no major climbs to worry about based on our experience.

That makes it a good option if you're comfortable with four or five-mile walks and fancy increasing the distance slightly without moving onto something much more challenging.

Is the Ackworth & Hundhill Walk Difficult?

Based on our experience, no.

Lyn and I rate the Ackworth and Hundhill Loop as easy.

The route covers 5.96 miles, so you'll need to be comfortable walking that distance, but we didn't encounter anything we'd describe as particularly strenuous.

As always, the weather can make a difference.

Field paths and tracks can become muddy following prolonged rain, so we'd recommend suitable footwear even though we've classified the walk as easy.

That's particularly worth remembering during a Yorkshire winter.

Is This Walk Suitable for Beginners?

If you're comfortable walking nearly six miles, we think it could be.

There aren't the sustained climbs or rough moorland sections that feature on some of our more challenging routes.

How Long Does the Ackworth & Hundhill Loop Take?

How long it takes will naturally depend on your walking pace and how often you stop.

Lyn and I don't rush.

We're normally taking photographs, looking around and stopping whenever something catches our attention.

That's especially true now we're recording walks for The White Shire.

We probably notice far more than we used to because we're constantly looking for something interesting to photograph or investigate afterwards.

For us, the enjoyment comes from the walk itself rather than how quickly we can complete it.

Walking Ackworth Through the Seasons

Because Ackworth is home, Lyn and I get to experience these paths throughout the year.

Spring brings new growth to the hedgerows.

Summer gives us long evenings when we can head out for a walk later in the day.

Autumn changes the colours around the fields and trees.

Winter opens up views through the countryside as the leaves disappear.

The same route can therefore feel surprisingly different depending on when you walk it.

Recent rainfall probably makes the biggest practical difference.

After prolonged wet weather, expect some countryside sections to be muddier.

This isn't our only walk around the village.

We've already explored several different routes beginning around Ackworth, including shorter loops and walks heading towards other nearby villages and countryside.

That's something we want The White Shire to be useful for.

Lyn and I rate it as easy.

It's longer than some of our other local Ackworth routes, but we found the terrain straightforward and enjoyed the mixture of village surroundings, open countryside and local history.

Hundhill Hall adds an interesting landmark along the way, while the countryside gives us the chance to leave the roads behind and enjoy a few hours walking close to home.

For us, that's one of the pleasures of living in Ackworth.

The White Shire takes us all over Yorkshire, but sometimes a good walk starts virtually on our own doorstep.

And at 5.96 miles, this is one of our favourite ways of exploring a little more of the countryside around the place we now call home.
