5.83mi Holme-on-Spalding-Moor Circular Walk

Lyn and I walked and recorded this 5.83-mile circular route around Holme-on-Spalding-Moor in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It's a longer outing than some of our easy walks, but we didn't find it particularly demanding. What we enjoyed most was exploring the quieter agricultural countryside around a village that rarely features in the usual lists of Yorkshire walking destinations.

Our Holme-on-Spalding-Moor Walk
This is countryside walking without dramatic hills or famous viewpoints. Beyond the village are broad fields, hedgerows and the open, largely agricultural landscape of this part of East Yorkshire. We found the walk quite manageable and enjoyed a change from the steep valleys and moors we visit elsewhere in the county.
At almost six miles, it's worth allowing time for the distance, even though we graded the route easy. Our photographs show the surroundings on the day we walked it. The original Komoot recording gives the actual circuit, rather than a new set of directions made up afterwards.
How the Landscape Changed
Holme-on-Spalding-Moor's name points to a time when much of the surrounding land was open moor, common ground and wetter countryside. The landscape has changed significantly as fields were enclosed and agriculture developed. Holme on Spalding Moor Local History Society preserves records of the enclosure of the old open fields and commons, which help explain the farmland visible around the village today.

All Saints' Church and Holme Hall
All Saints' Church is one of the village's notable historic buildings. Historic England records medieval work dating from the thirteenth century, with later alterations and restoration, and lists the church at Grade I. Holme Hall is another listed building associated with the area's landed history. Both help tell the story of a rural settlement whose buildings have survived many changes to the surrounding countryside.
