Spalding-Moor Circular Walk

The White Shire Walk

A Brief History of Spalding Moor

Spalding Moor is a historic area of low-lying land in the East Riding of Yorkshire, situated between Howden, Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, and the River Foulness. Its name likely derives from the Old English “Spaldingas”, meaning the people of Spald, combined with “Moor”, referring to the marshy or open lands that once dominated the area.

Historically, Spalding Moor was a wetland and fenland area, shaped by drainage schemes and agricultural development over centuries. The marshy terrain was gradually transformed into fertile farmland, making it a key agricultural hub by the medieval period. Small settlements and market towns developed around the edges of the moor, including Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, Wressle, and Foggathorpe.

The area also has historic connections to flood defence and drainage engineering, with rivers, drains, and dykes constructed to reclaim the land from marshes. This unique landscape shaped the culture and economy of the local communities for generations.

Walking Around Spalding Moor

Spalding Moor offers walkers a chance to explore open countryside, quiet lanes, and historic villages:

  • 🥾 Holme-on-Spalding-Moor Circular Walk – A gentle loop passing farmland, small woodland patches, and the village’s historic church.

  • 🌿 Rural Lane Walks – Paths connecting nearby villages such as Wressle and Bubwith offer extended walks across low-lying fields and hedgerows.

  • 🦋 Wildlife spotting opportunities include wetland birds, hedgerow mammals, and seasonal flora.

The flat terrain makes Spalding Moor ideal for family-friendly walks, cycling, or easy countryside strolls.
