8.25mi Rose Cottage to Sowerby Bridge Walk

We set off from Rose Cottage near Mytholmroyd for this 8.25-mile walk to Sowerby Bridge and back. The first stretch climbs away from the Calder Valley towards Scout Road, and that uphill start was the hardest part of the day. We stopped in Sowerby Bridge for a few pints before making the easier return.

What the Walk Was Like

The outing has two distinct halves. First comes the climb from Rose Cottage, with the countryside opening up towards Scout Road. The walk feels more demanding early on because of that ascent, not simply because of the mileage.

Sowerby Bridge made a natural destination, and we had time to stop for a drink there. The return was easier going, so the second part of the walk felt quite different from the beginning.

Sowerby Bridge and Its Waterways

Sowerby Bridge grew around the River Calder and the industries of the valley. Its canal basin connects the Rochdale Canal and Calder & Hebble Navigation, making it a good place to see how waterways once linked Yorkshire's mills and towns. That waterside industrial character contrasts with the higher countryside at the start of this walk.
