A Circular Walk Around Mytholmroyd

The White Shire Walks

There is a section missing from the walk, a mistake on my part, and an extra section that is unnecessary. The walk up Cragg Road is to the Robin Hood Pub, very nice too!!

Climbing Scout Hill

Starting from Mytholmroyd, Lyn and I set out on a circular walk that began with the steady climb up Scout Hill. The ascent quickly rewarded us with sweeping views, opening up the valley below and giving us a fresh perspective on the Calder Valley.

Across the Tops

Once at the top, the path stretched out across the countryside. The wide-open landscape offered wonderful views both up and down Calderdale, with rolling hills, patchwork fields, and the river winding its way through the valley. It was the kind of scenery that makes you pause and take it all in.

Down to Cragg Road

From the tops, the route led us down towards Cragg Road, a lane steeped in history and known today as one of the longest continuous climbs in England for cyclists. We turned left here, following the road until we reached a welcome stop.

A Pint at the Robin Hood

Our walk brought us to the Robin Hood pub, a beautiful and characterful spot tucked into the valley. With its cosy atmosphere and traditional feel, it was the perfect place to rest our legs and enjoy a pint together.

A Glimpse into Cragg Vale’s History

Cragg Vale has a fascinating past. Archaeological finds suggest human activity here dating back thousands of years, with traces of the Brigantes tribe, Anglo-Saxons, and Vikings shaping the valley. In later centuries, the area became known for its textile industry, with mills and cottages supporting generations of workers.

The Robin Hood Inn itself dates back to the early 1800s. Originally built as a coaching inn along the toll road to Lancashire, it became a hub for travellers and locals alike. Over the years, it has hosted celebrations, meetings, and music nights, cementing its place as a cornerstone of community life in Cragg Vale.

Cragg Vale’s Cycling Fame

Cragg Road is also legendary among cyclists. Stretching for over 5.5 miles (9 km), it is recognised as the longest continuous uphill road in England. Its steady gradient makes it a challenging climb, and it has even featured in the Tour de France Grand Départ when the race came to Yorkshire in 2014. Today, it attracts riders from across the country eager to test themselves against its relentless ascent.

Completing the Circle

From the Robin Hood, we looped back towards Mytholmroyd, completing the circle. The combination of hill climbs, open countryside, valley views, and a traditional pub stop made this walk a perfect showcase of what Calderdale has to offer.

A Walk of Variety and Charm

This circular route around Mytholmroyd blends everything we love about walking in the Calder Valley: dramatic views, peaceful paths, cycling heritage, and a touch of local hospitality. It’s a walk that captures the spirit of the area and leaves you with lasting memories.
