Thwaite Watermill to Leeds Dock Circular Walk – 4.33 Miles

This Leeds circular walk connects the Thwaite Watermill area with the city's historic waterfront and Leeds Dock. It is a walk shaped by the River Aire, the Aire & Calder Navigation and Leeds' industrial past, rather than remote countryside. Parking and Practical Information
Parking: If driving, check available visitor car parks around Leeds Dock or near the route's recorded starting point; charges and restrictions can change. Public transport: Leeds railway station offers connections into the city, but allow time to reach the walk. Refreshments: There are cafés and other venues around Leeds Dock. Toilets: Check the facilities at individual venues rather than assuming access along the full route.
Important: Thwaite Mills closed to public visitors in April 2024. In August 2026, new owners announced a restoration project with the intention of reopening it as a working museum, café and pub. Do not plan a visit inside the mill until an official opening is confirmed. See the Visit Leeds restoration announcement.
A Little History
Thwaite Watermill's history reaches back to a fulling mill operating by 1641. The Aire & Calder Navigation Company later redeveloped the mill in the 1820s with major new water-powered machinery. The site manufactured products including oil and putty during its industrial life. Leeds City Council's mill history explains why Thwaite is an important survivor of the city's manufacturing past.
Leeds Dock and its surrounding waterways were once part of the commercial network that carried materials and goods through industrial West Yorkshire. Today's waterfront retains reminders of the warehouses, locks and river engineering that helped the city grow.
