A Brief History of Barnburgh

Barnburgh is a charming rural village in South Yorkshire, lying between Doncaster and Mexborough, surrounded by open countryside and farmland. Its history stretches back to at least Saxon times, with the name thought to mean “stronghold of Beorn’s people.”

At the heart of the village stands St Peter’s Church, one of the oldest in the area, dating from the 12th century. It’s famous locally for the “Cat and Man” legend, which tells of Sir Percival Cresacre — a medieval knight supposedly attacked by a wild cat on his return from hunting. Both were said to have perished within the church porch, leaving scratch marks that can still be seen on the stone today.

During the industrial era, Barnburgh grew modestly thanks to nearby Barnburgh Main Colliery, which operated from 1911 until its closure in 1989. Despite its mining past, the village has retained its traditional character, with stone cottages, quiet lanes, and expansive views over the Dearne Valley.
