At The White Shire, I’m passionate about showcasing the best of Yorkshire—its landscapes, history, and hidden gems. One of my favourite featured routes on the Yorkshire Walks page is a scenic walk around Langsett Reservoir, located on the edge of the Peak District near Barnsley and Penistone.
Langsett Reservoir is steeped in history. Completed in 1904, it was built to supply water to the growing population of Sheffield and surrounding areas. The village of Langsett itself has roots going back centuries, with records dating as far back as the 13th century. While walking here, you’ll see remnants of the area's past, including traditional dry-stone walls, old packhorse routes, and ancient woodland that once served local farming communities.
Today, Langsett Reservoir is not only a vital water source but also a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts. The walk I’ve tracked and promoted takes you through open moorland, conifer plantations, and native woodland, with fantastic views of the water and surrounding hills. It’s a walk that blends Yorkshire’s natural beauty with a rich cultural landscape, making it a must-visit for walkers, photographers, and nature lovers alike.
Check out the full route on my Yorkshire Walks page, and enjoy exploring this peaceful corner of South Yorkshire.
