A Canal-Side Stroll: Mytholmroyd to Hebden Bridge and Back

The White Shire Walks

Setting Off from Mytholmroyd

On a crisp morning, Lyn and I set out from Mytholmroyd, following the Rochdale Canal towpath westward. The route is gentle, weaving past locks, stone bridges, and stretches of water lined with trees and old mill buildings. It’s a walk that feels both peaceful and full of character, with the Calder Valley’s history never far from view.

The Canal Path to Hebden Bridge

The towpath led us straight into Hebden Bridge, a town that has become a hub for creativity and independent spirit. The walk there and back measured 5.31 miles in total, making it a perfect half-day outing. Along the way, we passed dog walkers, cyclists, and fellow ramblers, all enjoying the calm of the canal.

Exploring Hebden Bridge

Once in town, we wandered through the independent shops, browsing everything from quirky gifts to local crafts. Hebden Bridge’s streets are full of character, with stone terraces, colourful shopfronts, and a lively atmosphere. After exploring, we stopped for a few pints in one of the local pubs, soaking up the friendly vibe before heading back.

The Return Journey

Retracing our steps along the canal, the walk back to Mytholmroyd felt just as enjoyable. The towpath offers plenty of spots to pause and take in the scenery, and the gentle rhythm of walking beside the water made for a relaxing end to the day.

A Simple Pleasure in The White Shire

This circular walk from Mytholmroyd to Hebden Bridge and back reminded us of the simple joys of the Calder Valley. With its mix of history, scenery, and local charm, it’s a route that blends exercise with exploration—and a pint or two along the way.
