Discover Interesting Places in Yorkshire

From well-known Yorkshire attractions to small independent businesses, hidden gems and places you might never have thought to visit, The White Shire is building a different kind of guide to Yorkshire.

Our attraction guides are about discovering somewhere interesting — whether it's a historic building, a small café, a fascinating local business, a beautiful garden, an unusual landmark or somewhere with a story worth telling.

We're not trying to list every attraction in Yorkshire.

We're looking for the places that are interesting.

A Different Kind of Yorkshire Guide

Yorkshire already has some excellent websites covering its biggest attractions and major tourist destinations.

The White Shire isn't trying to replace them.

Instead, we're interested in the places that can easily be overlooked.

That could be a tiny café tucked away in a Yorkshire village, a historic building you walk past without knowing its story, an independent business with an interesting history, a beautiful garden, an unusual local landmark or a place that simply deserves to be better known.

Some places we feature may be well known.

Others may be completely new to you.

That's the point.

Big Attractions and Little Discoveries

A Yorkshire attraction doesn't have to be a huge visitor destination.

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries are much smaller.

A café might have an unusual story.

A village shop might occupy a building that's hundreds of years old.

A garden might contain something you wouldn't expect to find in the middle of a Yorkshire village.

A local business might have been making the same product for generations.

And sometimes a seemingly ordinary building can reveal an important part of Yorkshire's history.

These are the stories we want to uncover.

Discover Somewhere Different

The White Shire is building a growing collection of places to visit and things to discover across West, North, East and South Yorkshire.

Our guides can help you find:

  • Historic places

  • Independent cafés and food businesses

  • Small museums and collections

  • Gardens and outdoor spaces

  • Interesting shops and local businesses

  • Heritage buildings

  • Family-friendly places

  • Yorkshire landmarks

  • Unusual and quirky places

  • Hidden gems

  • Places with an interesting story

You can also combine these discoveries with our Yorkshire Walks, making a visit part of a bigger day exploring the county.

From Pontefract to the Yorkshire Coast

We're interested in the whole of Yorkshire.

That means looking beyond the obvious destinations and discovering interesting places in towns, villages and rural areas across the county.

From West Yorkshire and the towns around Pontefract, Wakefield and Leeds to North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales, East Yorkshire, the Wolds, Yorkshire Coast and South Yorkshire, we're continually looking for places worth discovering.

Have You Discovered Somewhere Interesting?

One of the things that makes this section different is that we don't need to decide what counts as an attraction based purely on size or popularity.

If you've discovered somewhere in Yorkshire that you think deserves to be featured, we'd love to hear about it.

It could be somewhere famous.

Or it could be somewhere almost nobody outside the local area knows about.

If it's interesting, has a story, offers something different or gives people another reason to explore Yorkshire, it could have a place on The White Shire.

Explore More of Yorkshire

The Attractions section is just one part of The White Shire.

You can also explore our Yorkshire Walks, discover Yorkshire Businesses, find ideas through What's On in Yorkshire, or explore our growing collection of Yorkshire History.

Together, we're building a resource designed to help people discover more of Yorkshire — not just the places they've already heard of.
