Our Stay at the Cottage
We spent a lovely weekend in this cosy little cottage right in the centre of Pateley Bridge, and it couldn’t have been a better base. The moment we stepped inside, it was clear how much care had gone into the place. It was sparklingly clean, beautifully decorated throughout, and wonderfully warm and inviting — exactly what you want after a day exploring Nidderdale.
The location is spot on. Being right in the middle of town means you’re only a short stroll from shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants, yet the cottage remains surprisingly peaceful. Everything you need is close by, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing break.
Food, Pubs and Local Favourites
We can definitely recommend the Sunday lunch at The Crown. The food was excellent, and the service was genuinely friendly — the kind of welcome that makes you feel instantly at home.

Walking and Scenery Around Pateley Bridge
The walking around Pateley Bridge is simply stunning. Nidderdale offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the Yorkshire Dales, with routes for every pace and preference. Whether you’re wandering along the River Nidd or heading up into the hills for wider views, the landscape never disappoints.
Great Hosts and Smooth Communication
Communication from the hosts, Lorraine and Simon, was excellent from start to finish. They made everything easy, and it’s clear they take real pride in making guests feel welcome. We’ll definitely be returning.
A Brief History of Pateley Bridge
Early Origins
Pateley Bridge sits in the heart of Nidderdale, an area with human activity stretching back thousands of years. Neolithic remains and ancient sites across the valley show that people have been drawn to this landscape since prehistoric times.
The First Recorded Settlement
The first written mention of Pateley Bridge appears in 1175. The town grew along the River Nidd — a name with Celtic roots meaning “sparkling” — and became an important settlement within the wider parish of High and Low Bishopside. This name reflects the land’s historic connection to the Archbishop of York before the Norman Conquest.
Industry and Development
Over the centuries, Pateley Bridge developed through agriculture, quarrying, and especially lead mining, which played a major role in shaping the town and surrounding communities. A market charter was granted in the 14th century, and the High Street still carries that traditional market‑town character today.
Pateley Bridge Today
Modern Pateley Bridge is a welcoming, vibrant place surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Yorkshire Dales. With its mix of history, independent shops, friendly pubs, and stunning walks, it remains one of Nidderdale’s most charming destinations.
