Discover Pontefract
Pontefract is one of Yorkshire’s historic market towns, best known for the dramatic ruins of Pontefract Castle and the stories that surround them. The castle was built shortly after 1086 by Ilbert de Lacy and became known as the Key to the North. It later played an important part in the Wars of the Roses, the English Civil Wars and the story of Richard II.
History is not confined to the castle. Pontefract Museum, in an attractive Art Nouveau building on Salter Row, explores the town’s royal connections, Civil War history and famous liquorice industry. Around the centre, historic streets, churches, the Buttercross and the market help give Pontefract its distinctive character.
For visitors who want fresh air, Pontefract Park sits about a mile north of the town centre and offers open space for walking and recreation. The park also has a racecourse, sports facilities, a children's play area and Cafe@thePark.
Pontefract also works well as a base for a slower day out: explore the castle, visit the museum, stop for coffee, browse the market, enjoy a walk and then eat locally. The White Shire's town guide brings these strands together so visitors can see what Pontefract has to offer in one place.
