LATEST FROM THE WHITE SHIRE

Scarborough Castle is one of those Yorkshire landmarks that is almost impossible to miss. Standing high above the town on the headland between North Bay and South Bay, its ruined tower can be seen from much of Scarborough. We got some cracking views of it while staying in the town and walking along the coast below. But what you see today is only part of the story.

In 2011, a remarkable discovery was made in a back garden in Ackworth, West Yorkshire. Buried inside a ceramic pot were 539 silver coins, 52 gold coins and a gold ring. The collection had lain beneath the ground for more than 350 years and became known as the Ackworth Hoard.

Standing in the countryside near Wentworth, South Yorkshire, the Needle’s Eye is a 45-foot-high sandstone pyramid with a Gothic arch passing through its base. It forms part of the historic landscape surrounding Wentworth Woodhouse, alongside Hoober Stand, Keppel’s Column, the Rockingham Monument and other structures created across the estate.

There are some places where it's difficult to imagine the history that happened there. Sandal Castle isn't one of them. Stand among the ruins looking out across Wakefield and the surrounding countryside and it still feels like a place that ought to have a story to tell. Lyn and I have walked around Sandal Castle and the surrounding area, and knowing what happened here in the winter of 1460 makes the ruins considerably more interesting.
