Updated: 6 hours ago

Greno Woods sits on the northern edge of Sheffield, where it doesn't take long to leave the houses behind and find yourself amongst the trees. We recorded a 4.26-mile circular here, with woodland, some climbing and a bit of unexpected entertainment along the way.

Walk at a Glance

Distance: 4.26 miles (6.9 km). Type: Circular. Location: Grenoside, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Ascent: Approximately 525 feet on our Komoot recording. Terrain: Woodland paths and tracks. Start and finish: On the original Komoot map.

Parking and Visitor Information

We parked in a lay-by near the start of our walk. There is also a car park nearby, but it can be very busy, particularly at weekends. The route map shows where we started.

Our Thoughts on the Walk

There are a lot of routes for mountain bikes through the woods, but we only saw one. He was in a ditch, all bent out of shape and whining. We bid him good day and left him to it!

There is a fair amount of climbing for a relatively short walk, but it's good woodland countryside, with Sheffield only a short distance away.

A Little History

Greno Wood has been managed for centuries. Timber and woodland products once supported local industries, including charcoal burning and the making of baskets, brushes and clog soles. Grenoside also has a history of quarrying and metalworking; stone from around the village was used in local buildings. The woods sit alongside Wheata and Wharncliffe, part of a much larger belt of woodland on Sheffield's northern edge.
