Autumn in Yorkshire: Walks, Events and Places to Visit

Autumn is one of the best times to get out and explore Yorkshire. The colours change, the countryside feels completely different, seasonal events begin appearing across the county and many of Yorkshire’s best-known attractions take on a quieter, more atmospheric feel.

That is why we’ve expanded our seasonal coverage on The White Shire.

Our Seasonal Events in Yorkshire section is growing beyond simply helping you find Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas events. We’re bringing together more ideas for enjoying Yorkshire throughout autumn, including walks, places to visit and seasonal days out.

Whether you’re looking for a woodland walk surrounded by autumn colour, somewhere to take the family, a local community event or simply somewhere different to explore this weekend, the aim is to make it easier to find something genuinely worth doing.

Autumn Walks in Yorkshire

Yorkshire is made for autumn walking.

Woodland paths, reservoirs, moorland, historic villages and country parks all change dramatically as summer gives way to autumn. Cooler temperatures can also make longer walks much more enjoyable than they were during the hottest part of the year.

We’ll be highlighting walks from across Yorkshire that are particularly suited to the season, including routes where you can enjoy autumn colour, open countryside, historic landscapes and quieter paths.

Every route in our main Yorkshire Walks section has been walked by us, with practical information including distance, terrain, parking, facilities and route maps to help you decide whether a walk is right for you. The White Shire

Rather than simply producing lists of places that look good in autumn, we want The White Shire to help you find routes and places you can actually go out and explore.

Seasonal Events Across Yorkshire

Autumn also brings a completely different calendar of events.

From harvest celebrations and food festivals to heritage events, local fairs, Halloween activities and community gatherings, there is plenty happening throughout West, North, East and South Yorkshire.

Our What’s On This Month in Yorkshire listings bring events from across all four Yorkshire regions together in one place and continue to change as new events are added. The White Shire

You can also go directly to our Seasonal Events in Yorkshire page for Halloween events, bonfire nights, Christmas markets and other seasonal events, including smaller local events that can easily be missed. The White Shire

That local side is important to us.

Some of Yorkshire’s best days out aren’t necessarily the events with the biggest advertising budgets. They can be village shows, community gatherings, independent markets and small local festivals.

Those deserve to be discovered too.

Places to Visit This Autumn

Not every autumn day needs an organised event.

Yorkshire has castles, museums, historic sites, country parks, gardens, heritage attractions and countless interesting places that can make an excellent autumn day out.

Our Places to Visit in Yorkshire section brings many of those ideas together, alongside our walks and other Yorkshire guides. The White Shire

Some places are particularly good when the leaves begin to change. Others give you somewhere interesting to explore when the weather becomes less predictable.

The idea is simple: if you wake up on a Saturday morning wondering, “Where could we go today?”, The White Shire should help you find an answer.

Yorkshire Changes With the Seasons

One of the great things about Yorkshire is that the same place can feel completely different depending on when you visit.

A woodland walk in October is a very different experience from the same route in May.

A historic town on a quiet autumn afternoon feels different from visiting during the middle of the summer holidays.

And seasonal events often introduce people to places they might never otherwise have thought about visiting.

That is exactly what we want the expanded seasonal section to help with.

More Than Just Autumn

This isn’t intended to be a page that gets forgotten once October is over.

As the year changes, so will the things we feature.

Autumn will gradually give way to winter days out, Christmas events and New Year activities, followed by spring walks, places to visit and seasonal events as Yorkshire changes again.

The aim is to build a useful year-round seasonal guide rather than a collection of pages that quickly become outdated.

Explore Autumn in Yorkshire

If you’re looking for something to do over the coming weeks, start with our Seasonal Events in Yorkshire page, browse our Yorkshire Walks, see what’s happening through What’s On This Month or find somewhere different through our Places to Visit in Yorkshire section.

We’ll keep adding more as the season develops and as we discover more places worth including.

And, as always, we’ll keep looking beyond the obvious tourist attractions to include the local places, communities and events that make Yorkshire what it is.

Explore Yorkshire this autumn with The White Shire — walks, events, attractions and places worth discovering across West, North, East and South Yorkshire.
