The Walk
Kirkstall Abbey is the main landmark along this route. The walk also includes waterside sections around the River Aire and canal towpaths, together with paths through Kirkstall.
The original account grades the route easy, noting that the distance is over six miles but without prolonged steep climbs.
A Bit of Local History
Kirkstall Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1152. The abbey closed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539.
Its surviving ruins stand beside the River Aire, a waterway that also played an important part in the later industrial development of Leeds.
