Langsett Reservoir sits above the Little Don valley on the edge of the Peak District, not far from Penistone. Lyn and I recorded a 4.39-mile circular here, through woodland and around the reservoir landscape. The photographs and route recording are our own.

A Little History
Langsett Reservoir was constructed between 1898 and 1904 as South Yorkshire's industrial towns needed larger and more reliable water supplies. The works transformed the valley of the Little Don. Sheffield's steel industry and the expanding communities of Barnsley and the surrounding district all depended on large engineering projects like this one. Langsett remains a major water-supply reservoir.
Its embankment and adjoining valley are now familiar Yorkshire scenery, but they're also part of the county's industrial history. The Peak District National Park's Langsett conservation appraisal records the effect the reservoir's construction had on the old settlement.
