The Ackworth Mystery Walk
The Ackworth Mystery Walk – Can You Solve the Mystery?
There’s a mystery waiting to be solved in Ackworth.
The White Shire’s Ackworth Mystery Walk is a self-guided walking adventure that turns a walk around the village into an investigation.
Instead of simply following a route, you’ll work your way through a story, visit different locations around Ackworth, solve clues and gradually eliminate suspects and evidence.
By the end of the walk, only one suspect and one piece of evidence should remain.
The question is: will you solve it?
A Walk With a Difference
The Ackworth Mystery Walk has been designed to make exploring the village a little more interesting.
You follow the trail using your phone, with each stop revealing the next part of the investigation.
At different points you'll need to look carefully at your surroundings. Signs, buildings and other details along the route may provide the information you need to solve the next clue.
Get it right and you'll be able to eliminate another suspect or piece of evidence before moving on.
There are 12 stops to complete before the final reveal.
Meet the Investigators
Helping you through the case are Inspectors Hugh Dunnit and Sue Them.
They’re investigating what happened to Dan Doway's pram race cart at the Beverley Arms — and there are several suspects who could have been responsible.
Your job is to follow the evidence.
As you progress around Ackworth, you'll eliminate suspects and evidence one by one. Your choices remain crossed out as you continue through the investigation, making it easier to see the case gradually taking shape.
Eventually, you should be left with your culprit.
And the evidence that proves it.
You Don't Need to Download an App
One of the things we wanted to avoid was making people download another app simply to take part.
The Mystery Walk runs through The White Shire and is designed to be used on your phone as you walk.
You can also add it to your phone's home screen before setting off, making it much easier to return to the trail while you're out.
Then simply follow the instructions from one stop to the next.
What If You Lose Your Way?
We've thought about that too.
The Mystery Walk is intended to be followed using the directions provided as part of the trail, rather than staring at a map throughout the walk.
But everybody misses a turning occasionally.
So we've also made the Ackworth Mystery Walk route available on Komoot as a backup.
If you're unsure where you are or think you've wandered away from the route, you can open the route and use your position to get yourself back on track.
It's there as a safety net rather than the main way to complete the walk — we'd much rather you were looking around Ackworth for clues than staring at a navigation screen.
Take Your Time
This isn't a race.
Part of the idea is to enjoy the walk itself.
Ackworth has plenty of history and character that can easily go unnoticed when you're simply driving through the village. On foot, you start noticing buildings, old routes, details and little corners that you might otherwise pass without a second thought.
Stop when you want to. Have a drink. Grab something to eat. Then pick the investigation back up and carry on.
A Yorkshire Mystery Created Locally
The Ackworth Mystery Walk isn't a generic walking route dropped onto a map.
The route, story and clues have been created around Ackworth itself.
It's something we've developed at The White Shire as another way of encouraging people to get outside and explore Yorkshire — particularly the towns and villages that don't always appear in conventional visitor guides.
If the Ackworth trail proves popular, we'd like this to be the beginning rather than the end.
There are plenty more Yorkshire places capable of hiding a good mystery.
Are You Ready to Investigate?
Charge your phone, get your walking shoes on and keep your eyes open.
Somewhere around Ackworth are the clues you need.
Follow the trail.
Examine the evidence.
Eliminate the suspects.
And see whether you can solve the Ackworth Mystery Walk.
