North Yorkshire
Filey Kite Festival
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | 10am–4pm | Filey Brigg Country Park
Filey’s skies come alive with giant inflatable kites and displays from experienced kite flyers. There’s also a funfair, food traders, a learn-to-fly area and kite-making. Entry is free, although normal parking charges apply. (This is the Coast)
Harrogate Autumn Flower Show
Friday 18–Sunday 20 September | Newby Hall
One of the big gardening events of the autumn, with leading nurseries, fruit and vegetable displays, expert advice, thousands of autumn blooms and floral installations throughout Newby Hall. (Newby Hall)
Grassington 1940s Weekend
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | Grassington
Grassington steps back to the 1940s with vintage vehicles, live entertainment, period music, market stalls, a replica Spitfire and plenty happening around the village. (Grassington 1940s)
Nidderdale Agricultural Show
Sunday 20 September | Nidderdale Showground, Pateley Bridge
A proper traditional Yorkshire agricultural show celebrating farming and rural life, with livestock, horses, show jumping, trade stands, food and family activities. (nidderdaleshow)
York Food & Drink Festival
Friday 18–Sunday 27 September | York city centre
The festival begins this weekend with food markets, independent Yorkshire producers, street food, demonstrations, tastings, family food workshops and evening entertainment around Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square. (York Food Festival)

South Yorkshire
Heritage Open Weekend at Potteric Carr
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | Potteric Carr Nature Reserve, Doncaster
A Heritage Open Weekend at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Potteric Carr nature reserve — a good choice if you fancy combining wildlife and the outdoors with a local event.
Medieval Knights at Conisbrough Castle

Head to one of South Yorkshire’s great medieval landmarks for a Heritage Open Day featuring medieval knights and the chance to explore the castle and its history.
Sheffield Town Hall Heritage Open Day

Welcoming the Moon
Saturday 19 September | 11am–4pm | Weston Park Museum, Sheffield
A free cross-cultural family celebration featuring lantern-making, creative workshops, shadow puppetry, storytelling, karaoke and activities inspired by different cultural connections with the moon. (Welcome To Sheffield)
Dry Stone Walling at Wentworth Castle Gardens
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | 11am–2pm | Wentworth Castle Gardens
Watch experienced dry-stone walling volunteers demonstrating this traditional countryside craft and even have a go yourself. The event is free and no booking is required. (National Trust)

East Yorkshire
Spurn Heritage Tour
Sunday 20 September | 11am–12.30pm | Spurn National Nature Reserve
Explore another side of Spurn on a guided heritage walk covering lost settlements, shipwrecks, lifeboats and the reserve’s former railway. Places are limited and booking is essential. (YWT)
Heritage Open Days at Maister House

Take a rare look inside this Georgian merchant’s house in Hull’s Old Town. The free weekend includes history talks and chamber music performances throughout the building. (National Trust)
1698 Baptist Chapel Heritage Open Days
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | 11am–4pm | Applegarth Lane, Bridlington
Visit what is believed to be Yorkshire’s oldest Baptist chapel still in use. The little chapel and graveyard are tucked away behind the Bayle Gate area and open free as part of Heritage Open Days. (Heritage Open Days)
Walking East Yorkshire Festival
Final weekend – Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | Various locations
The final weekend of the Walking East Yorkshire Festival offers another chance to explore the county through guided walks and outdoor activities, ranging from countryside routes to town, wildlife and heritage experiences. Many activities require advance booking. (Visit East Yorkshire)
Hull’s Youth Stories – Photo Scanning Day
Saturday 19 September | 12–3pm | Wilberforce House Museum, Hull
A particularly nice local event: Hull Museums is asking residents to bring along old photographs showing what it was like growing up in Hull. Photographs will be scanned and returned immediately, with selected images potentially becoming part of the forthcoming Hull’s Youth Stories exhibition. It’s free and there’s no need to book. West Yorkshire
Saltaire Festival – Finale Weekend

The final weekend includes the Continental Street Market, charity stalls, Saltaire Art Group exhibition, vintage home and fashion fair, music and other community events around the village. (Saltaire Festival)
The Hepworth Wakefield Harvest Festival
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | 10am–5pm | The Hepworth Wakefield
Celebrate the start of autumn with more than 70 independent designers, makers and producers selling artisan food, drink, homeware, plants, prints, textiles and seasonal produce. Families can also enjoy activities in the galleries and garden. Advance entry is £2.50, with under-18s and members free. (The Hepworth Wakefield)
Otley Folk Festival
Friday 18–Sunday 20 September | Venues across Otley
The 35th Otley Folk Festival brings concerts, sessions, workshops and street entertainment to venues around the town, with a substantial line-up of established and local folk musicians. (Otley Folk Festival)
Middleton Railway Heritage Open Days
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | Middleton Railway, Leeds

Pontefract Heritage Open Days
Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 September | Various Pontefract venues
There’s a particularly strong local programme in Pontefract this weekend. Saturday includes free dungeon tours and storytelling at Pontefract Castle, a community art exhibition and events exploring the town’s heritage. (Pontefract Civic Society)

Pennine Folk Club
Sunday 20 September | 1.30–4.30pm | Stocksmoor Village Hall
For something properly local, Pennine Folk Club is holding its European Folk Day celebration with special guest Hilary Spencer. Singers, musicians and listeners are all welcome, and entry is £3 including refreshments. (Pennine Folk Club)
Woodland Crafts at Lotherton
Saturday 19 September | 11am–3pm | Lotherton
A drop-in family workshop using natural materials to create wooden crafts inspired by nature. It costs £3 per participant in addition to normal admission and is recommended for ages six and over, although all ages are welcome. (Leeds Museums and Galleries)
