A Brief History of Cawood

Cawood is a picturesque village in North Yorkshire, set on the banks of the River Ouse, about 11 miles south of York. It’s one of Yorkshire’s most historic river villages, once serving as the residence of the Archbishops of York for over 500 years.

At the heart of the village stands the Cawood Castle Gatehouse, built in the 15th century and once part of a grand medieval palace complex. The castle was visited by several English kings, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, and became known as the “Windsor of the North.” Although most of the palace was dismantled after the Civil War, the gatehouse still stands and is now cared for by the Landmark Trust.

Cawood grew around its strategic river crossing and ferry point, thriving as a fishing and trading settlement. Its riverside heritage remains clear today, with stone cottages, narrow lanes, and views of passing boats along the Ouse.
