Cawood Circular Walk – 5.75 Miles near Selby

Cawood is a historic village on the River Ouse, close to Selby in North Yorkshire. Lyn and I walked and recorded a 5.75-mile circular in the surrounding countryside. We found it relatively easy for its distance, helped by the generally flatter landscape. The original Komoot route and our photograph are preserved below.

Distance: 5.75 miles (around 9.3 km). Route: Circular. Location: Cawood, near Selby, North Yorkshire. Difficulty: Easy based on our experience, though it is nearly six miles. Start and finish: See the exact marker on the Komoot route. Terrain: Village and countryside footpaths, with uneven or muddy ground possible after rain.
The recorded GPS map is the source for this particular circuit. Check its start and footpath line before travelling, rather than assuming that another Cawood route uses the same paths.
Parking and Visitor Information
Parking: Check current restrictions near the GPS start point; we have not confirmed a dedicated car park for this exact walk. Refreshments: Cawood has village facilities, but check individual venues' opening times before setting off. Toilets: Public facilities along the route have not been verified. Dogs: Use a lead near livestock and take care at roads and riverside areas.
If you're visiting for the history as well as the walk, allow time to see Cawood village and the Castle Gatehouse from public areas. Heritage designation does not mean that the surviving buildings are necessarily open to enter.
A Little History
Cawood was an important residence and administrative centre for the medieval Archbishops of York. The surviving Cawood Castle Gatehouse, built in the 15th century, is Grade I listed. Nearby Castle Garth contains historic earthworks and evidence of the palace gardens and fishponds.
The village stands beside a major old River Ouse crossing, which contributed to its importance for transport and trade. You can read more about the site in Historic England's scheduled-monument record.
