Cusworth Hall, Doncaster – A Sunday at the Craft & Makers Market
On Sunday, Lyn and I headed over to Cusworth Hall in Doncaster for what turned out to be a really enjoyable few hours.
We’d gone because the Craft & Makers Market at Cusworth Hall was taking place, with stalls both outside and inside the Hall. It was one of those events that suited the setting perfectly — plenty to wander around, local makers to browse and a relaxed atmosphere rather than something that felt overcrowded or over-organised.
The official event was run by Cusworth Hall and Little Hummingbird Events, bringing together handmade crafts, artwork, independent makers, artisan food and local produce from around South Yorkshire. Visit Doncaster

A wander around the Hall
Cusworth Hall itself was open while we were there, and some of the stalls had been set up inside, so we could browse the market and have a look around the building at the same time.
The Hall is a Grade I listed building dating from the 1740s and now houses Doncaster’s social history museum. Admission to the museum is normally free, and there is plenty inside to make it worth stepping through the doors rather than only visiting the grounds. Doncaster Council
Pork chilli pie – definitely a good decision
Naturally, we found the food.
I went for a pork chilli pie, which was excellent. Properly tasty and exactly the sort of thing you hope to find at a local makers' market.
Lyn went for a sausage roll, which also went down very well.
Sometimes it’s these little things that make a day out. A walk around somewhere interesting, a few stalls, something good to eat and nowhere you particularly need to rush off to.

The grounds are worth the visit on their own
After looking around the stalls and the Hall, we headed out into the grounds.
Cusworth Hall sits in a large area of historic parkland, with plenty of room for a relaxed walk. There are paths around the estate and good open views, so even without an event taking place it makes a pleasant place to spend a couple of hours.
That was probably our favourite part of the visit. Once we’d finished browsing, we could just head off for a wander rather than getting straight back in the car.
Parking was free for us when we visited. The official event information currently says parking charges may apply, though, so it is worth checking before setting off rather than assuming it will always be free. Visit Doncaster
A good example of what we mean by Out & About
This is exactly the sort of place we want to include in The White Shire’s Out & About section.

It wasn’t about spending a fortune or planning an entire day around one attraction. We went to a local market, discovered more of Cusworth Hall, had some good food and spent time walking around the grounds.
A simple few hours out, but a very enjoyable one.

Our verdict: a lovely few hours, a good local market, an interesting Hall, great grounds for a wander — and I’d happily have another one of those pork chilli pies.
