East Yorkshire Coastal Walks: Hornsea, Withernsea and Bempton

The East Riding coast changes character as you travel south from the chalk cliffs around Flamborough to the seaside towns of Hornsea and Withernsea. Lyn and I have recorded walks around both towns, and the original Komoot maps are linked below. We've also included official routes around Bempton and Flamborough for anyone planning a different sort of day out.
Our Recorded East Yorkshire Coastal Walks
2.84mi Hornsea Treasure Trail
Our Hornsea walk was a family mystery trail rather than a conventional countryside circular. We took our grandson, followed the clues around the town and seafront, and had a great time trying to solve the mystery. The original recording and photographs are in our Hornsea Treasure Trail walk.
Hornsea's town centre and promenade are useful for an easy seaside outing, with Hornsea Mere a separate attraction nearby. Our original walk is 2.84 miles; we wouldn't describe it as a route all the way to Withernsea, as the older guide implied.
3.64mi Withernsea Circular Walk
Our Withernsea recording takes in the seaside town and its surroundings on a 3.64-mile circular walk. The promenade, old pier towers and lighthouse tell a little of the town's history, while the Komoot map shows the actual circuit. See our Withernsea Circular Walk for the map and photographs.
Official Coastal Trails Worth Exploring
Bempton Cliffs
Bempton Cliffs is best known for seabirds nesting on its huge chalk cliffs. The RSPB has a signed two-mile Cliff Top Trail with five viewpoints, plus a shorter half-mile Nature Trail. These are official reserve walks, not routes we're claiming to have GPS-recorded. Find current facilities, access arrangements and the maps on the RSPB Bempton Cliffs website.
Flamborough and the Headland Way
For a longer coastal route, Visit East Yorkshire describes the 12-mile Headland Way, taking in the dramatic coastline from Bempton towards Sewerby and the bays around Flamborough. You can choose a shorter section rather than the whole walk. Details of these coastal options are on the official Visit East Yorkshire walking page.
