3.22mi Hambleton Circular Walk

Lyn and I walked this 3.22-mile circular around Hambleton, near Selby, with our grandson Ally. It's a mixture of North Yorkshire farmland, quiet lanes and woodland around Hambleton Hough. Ally found a rope swing in the woods; that was rather more exciting to him than the miles we'd walked.

Hambleton Hough: A Little Yorkshire History

Hambleton Hough is a sandstone hill standing above the flatter countryside of the Vale of York. Its rock dates to the Triassic period, making it a rather unusual wooded feature among the surrounding fields. Along with nearby Brayton Barff, it has its share of local stories.

One piece of Yorkshire folklore tells how Hambleton Hough and Brayton Barff were formed when two witches threw great clods of earth at one another. That's the story, anyway. The geological explanation involves ancient sandstone and a good deal more time.
