Hambleton Circular Walk – An Easy Walk Near Selby

If you’re looking for an easy walk near Selby, the Hambleton Circular Walk is a lovely way to explore the quieter countryside of North Yorkshire. At around 3.22 miles, it is short enough for a few hours outdoors but varied enough to feel like a proper countryside walk.

The route combines open farmland, quiet country lanes and the woodland around Hambleton Hough. We walked it with our grandson Ally, and the woodland provided one of the memorable moments of the day when he discovered the rope swing.

About the Hambleton Circular Walk

Hambleton is a small village a few miles west of Selby, surrounded by the agricultural landscape of North Yorkshire. Walking gives you a much better feel for the countryside than simply passing through by road.

This route is particularly useful if you want a shorter walk near Selby rather than a full-day hike. There are no major climbs, and the combination of fields, hedgerows, woodland and lanes gives the route plenty of variety.

Hambleton Hough – The Highlight of the Walk

One of the most interesting features of the walk is Hambleton Hough, a wooded hill that rises above the otherwise low-lying landscape around Selby. Together with nearby Brayton Barff, it is a distinctive feature of the Vale of York.

Hambleton Hough is formed from Sherwood Sandstone deposited during the Triassic period. The harder sandstone has remained as higher ground while the surrounding landscape was shaped by later geological and glacial processes.

When you walk around Hambleton Hough, you are walking across a piece of very ancient Yorkshire geology. Knowing that makes the wooded hill and the views across the surrounding countryside even more interesting.

Walking Through the Woodland

As the route reaches Hambleton Hough, open fields and country lanes give way to woodland paths, creating a more enclosed and sheltered section of the route.

This was also the section that particularly appealed to Ally. He discovered the rope swing in the woodland and, as you might expect from a 10-year-old, it quickly became more important than how many miles we still had to walk! Informal woodland features can change, so always check that anything you use is safe.

A Walk Through the Selby Countryside

Away from the Hough, the route returns to open agricultural countryside. Fields, hedgerows and quiet lanes create a gentle landscape that feels very different from the busier areas around Selby.

There are no dramatic mountain views or strenuous climbs here. Instead, this is a walk about the quieter side of Yorkshire: open farmland, woodland, village surroundings and the changing character of the countryside through the seasons.

Walking Along Quiet Country Lanes

Part of the Hambleton Circular Walk follows quiet country lanes. They help link the different countryside and woodland sections, but quiet does not mean traffic-free.

Take care around bends and narrower sections, stay aware of vehicles and follow sensible road-walking practice. After wet weather, the woodland and natural paths can also become muddy or uneven.

A Little Yorkshire Folklore

One local tale says that Hambleton Hough and Brayton Barff were created when two witches threw clods of earth at each other.

The geological explanation is rather less magical, involving ancient sandstone and the processes that shaped the Vale of York. But the legend adds a little character to a walk through an otherwise peaceful landscape.
