Our Thoughts on Pocklington
Our Thoughts on Pocklington – A Yorkshire Wolds Favourite
We've visited Pocklington several times over the years, and it's a town we always enjoy coming back to.
The Yorkshire Wolds are a bit of a hidden gem. So many people drive straight past on their way to the coast without realising what they're missing. Beautiful countryside, rolling chalk hills, lovely villages and some cracking walks, all without the crowds you get in other parts of Yorkshire.
But don't tell everyone. Let's keep it our little secret! 😁
If you're planning a visit, our Pocklington Town Hub has more information about local places to eat, shops, attractions and things to do.
Where We've Stayed
We've stayed in a few different places around Pocklington over the years, all a bit different.
One of our first visits was to Chapel House, a converted chapel on the outskirts of town. Our grandson Alistair was only two at the time. We loved the quirkiness of the place, and Alistair loved being able to bend down to look out of the windows!
Another time we stayed at The Mile, a farm shop just outside Pocklington offering self-catering accommodation. It was reasonably priced, and we didn't mind the walk into town. They also offered camping, although our camping days are well behind us! 😂
We treated ourselves to a cooked breakfast one morning, which was very tasty. You can find more about The Mile Café in our Pocklington directory.
We've also stayed at Wytchings in Millington, a lovely village near Pocklington. It's a self-catering guest suite next door to The Gait Inn, with enough room for us, our son, daughter-in-law and grandson. We had a great weekend, and having a pub next door was certainly a bonus!
Then there was The Plough Inn at Hayton, a couple of miles outside Pocklington. This was a little different, being a guesthouse with a Chinese restaurant and takeaway on site. Not something you come across every day!
For anyone planning a few days away, we've also got a section dedicated to places to stay in Yorkshire.
Walking in the Yorkshire Wolds
There are some lovely walks around Pocklington, and it's one of the reasons we enjoy visiting.
One of our favourites starts in Millington. There's a fair old climb at the beginning, so be prepared, but the views across the Wolds make it well worth the effort.
If you're thinking of exploring the area yourself, our Millington Dale Circular Walk guide is another place to start.
It's a beautiful part of Yorkshire and somewhere we'd happily return to for another walk.
You can find more routes we've personally walked in our East Yorkshire Walks section, including maps and practical information.
A Few Drinks in Pocklington
We do enjoy finding a good pub or bar when we're away, and Pocklington has a few we've liked.
One of our favourites was Beach House. It's a quirky place with a real holiday feel about it. It's described as a cocktail bar, but neither of us drinks cocktails, and we still had a great time!
We've also enjoyed The Cross Keys, which had a good local pub atmosphere, and The Black Swan, which we found good value for money.
The Station Hotel is another we've visited, while Market Tap is a good spot for a bit of people-watching if you can get a window seat. Especially if you enjoy a real ale.
Judsons is another place we liked. It just has a nice feel to it.
A Look Around the Shops
Pocklington has some nice independent shops, which always makes a town more interesting to wander around.
Lyn particularly liked Sassy & Chic, where she found some lovely things in the sale. There are also a few charity shops, which are always going to get Lyn's attention!
If you fancy something sweet, there's Swilz, a shop specialising in gelato. We've not tried it ourselves, but it always seemed popular whenever we passed.
Would We Go Back?
Absolutely. Pocklington is a lovely Yorkshire market town with good pubs, independent shops and some beautiful countryside right on its doorstep.
We've enjoyed every visit, whether staying in town, exploring the surrounding villages or getting out for a walk in the Wolds.
It's one of those places that doesn't need to make a big fuss about itself. And that's probably why we like it.
