Discover Yorkshire Town Hubs: Walks, Coffee, Markets & Local Places
Yorkshire has no shortage of places worth exploring. But when you arrive in a town, finding the things you actually want to know — a decent coffee, somewhere to walk, what’s on or an interesting local place — can mean opening half a dozen websites. We thought there ought to be an easier way.
That’s why we’re building The White Shire’s Yorkshire Town Hubs. Each hub brings together practical information and local discoveries in one place, whether you’re planning a full day out or have just stopped somewhere for a couple of hours.
A proper guide to a Yorkshire town
We want these pages to be useful to real people visiting real places — not just another list of tourist attractions. Our town hubs bring together things to see and do, independent cafés and businesses, markets, local walks, accommodation and events. We include links to more information so you can decide where to go next.
We’re adding towns and building out the listings as we go. Some of the best discoveries are the smaller places you might otherwise walk straight past, and we want them to have a place alongside the better-known landmarks.
Explore our Yorkshire Town Hubs
Here are the five towns we’ve added so far. Each town has its own hub with more places and useful links.
Pontefract — our local town

Pontefract is close to home for us, so it’s a town we know well. There’s the history of Pontefract Castle, the market, the liquorice connections and some cracking independent places to call in for a drink or a bite to eat. The hub also points you towards local walks, places to visit and businesses. Explore the Pontefract Town Hub.
Skipton — castle, canal and market-town character

Skipton is a good place to spend a day. You’ve got its medieval castle, the canal, Castle Woods, the market and plenty of independent shops and coffee stops. Our guide pulls those together and includes walks and other places nearby. Explore the Skipton Town Hub.

Pocklington — a gateway to the Yorkshire Wolds
We’ve always enjoyed the Yorkshire Wolds, and Pocklington is a lovely place to start exploring them. The town has a traditional market and independent businesses, while Burnby Hall Gardens, the arts centre and Pocklington Canal offer different reasons to visit. Explore the Pocklington Town Hub.
Middleham — history and countryside

Middleham may be small, but it has plenty of character. There’s Middleham Castle and its connection with Richard III, the town’s racehorse-training heritage and some lovely surrounding countryside. We’ve included our own nearby walk and local places for refreshments. Explore the Middleham Town Hub.
Scarborough — more than a day at the seaside

Scarborough has the bays and beaches, of course, but there is much more to discover: the castle, the harbour, parks and gardens, independent businesses and walks with brilliant views of the coast. Our hub brings those ideas together so you can explore beyond the seafront. Explore the Scarborough Town Hub.
Make a day of it — or stay a little longer
Start with the town itself, add a walk or a local attraction, then see what’s nearby. If you’d rather take your time, look for somewhere to stay and explore the surrounding area over a weekend. The hubs are designed to help you piece together the sort of outing you actually enjoy.
You can also browse our Yorkshire walks and What’s On in Yorkshire pages for more inspiration. We’re building the town guides into a useful starting point for both visitors and Yorkshire folk looking for somewhere new.
Help us keep Yorkshire local
The White Shire is independent and run by us, Mick and Lyn. We enjoy finding good walks, interesting places and businesses with a bit of character, and we want the town hubs to reflect that. If you know somewhere worth including, we’d love to hear about it.
We aim to keep the guides up to date, but opening hours, prices and availability do change, so please check the venue’s official website or social page before setting off.
Take a look at all our Yorkshire Town Hubs — and keep checking back as we add more towns and local discoveries.
